Moneygashel Cashel/Stone Fort Moneygashel Townland is situated on the western side of the Cavan-Burren Park. The whole area is now part of the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark. If you are in the area I would strongly recommend a visit the megalithic monuments in the Cavan-Burren Park. There are three cashels in Moneygashel, the one pictured above is the central and best preserved of the three ringforts. The cashel is situated on a steep slope and is about 24.5 metres in diameter. Within the massive stone walls there is a stairway and an entrance to a souterrain on the south side. The souterrain was belived to be at least 6 metres long.
The entrance to the cashel, below right, is situated at the east side. It is about 1.2 metres wide with at least 7 lintel stones lying across the 2.75 metre thick walls. From the south east of the cashel there are excellent views of the Cuilgagh Mountain range. The other cashels lie approximately 0.5 metres NE, and SW of the central cashel. A ruined portal tomb is situated in the same townland, just 250 metres ENE from here. |

Situated: From Blacklion head west on the N16 for 450 metres, take slight left onto the R206. After 1K turn left for Cornagee. Go about 5 kilometres and turn right for Lough Macnean. Then take a right (Private road) signposted 'Moneygashel Fort' the fort is about 600 metres up here atthe end of a farm track. Discovery Map 26: H 0594 3390. Last visit May 2016.
